The Coimbatore City Police have stepped up surveillance in busy market areas in view of Deepavali.
The elaborate arrangements include monitoring at busy market areas by policemen in plain clothes, watch towers at prominent places and special teams to watch out for history-sheeters.
City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan told The Hindu on Tuesday that special teams were already formed in West, East, Central and South zones for prevention of crimes such as bag lifting, pocket-picking, attention diversion and theft of valuables from busy shopping areas. “List and photos of history-sheeters and offenders who have come out of prison are already being circulated among the teams. Police in mufti will monitor their movement. Preventive arrests can also be done if required,” he said.
The police will also alert people through public addressing system at market places to keep their money, valuables and children safe. The public addressing system will also be used to ease traffic congestions.
The police expect rush in the market a week before Deepavali, which falls on October 27.
