Poachers pay fine for hunting sambar deer

Forest department personnel attached to the Nilgiri North Forest Division arrested eight persons on Saturday for hunting a sambar deer.

The personnel, on receiving information about deer poaching at Baragani, conducted a surprise check at Keradamattam village in the locality based on directions from the District Forest Officer in-charge C. Badrasamy .

The team saw the carcass of the deer, aged about two to three years, that was hunted by eight persons of the village using dogs. A fine of Rs. 10,000 each was imposed on the accused Mahalingam, Ganesh, Mani, Kumar, Mohandas, Mani, Raja and Yogarathinam. They were released after they paid the fine.
