The Plus Two Public Examination results announced on Thursday had both highs and lows for the city.

For the first time in several decades, it achieved a State first rank.

However, Coimbatore slipped down in the overall ranking to ninth place from the seventh last year. The pass percentage also recorded a marginal decline, to 94.36 per cent, compared to 94.89 in 2014.

While expressing happiness at achieving a State topper, Chief Educational Officer A. Gnanagowri said the Department relaxed the norms for letting students attend the examinations. Even students with low attendance records were allowed to take the exams.

Further, she noted that Coimbatore had sent the highest number of candidates in the top nine districts. The total number of schools that sent candidates increased to 325 this year from the 317 last year.

The number of schools that secured cent per cent pass percentage was 134, up by one from last year.

Of the total 36,908 students who appeared, 34,825 passed the exams. In keeping with the trend of recent years, the girls yet again outscored the boys and achieved 95.55 pass percentage compared to the 94.36 pass percentage of the boys.

However, the gap between the two is steadily reducing.

The number of students who failed went up to 2,083 from 1,868 last year as did the total number of candidates, which went up to 36,908 this year to 36,573 last year.

The district topper L.B. Nivetha of Sri Sowdeswari Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who scored 1,192, also shared the State first rank. The second rank went to G.S. Abhinaya (1,188) of Vidyaa Vikas Matriculation Higher Secondary School and the third rank was shared by K.S. Pavithra and N. Ponmala, both scored 1,186 and were from G.R.G. Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

Matriculation Higher Secondary School, both scored 1,190. K. Vishnupriya of Bharathi Matriculation Higher Secondary School and E.
