Plumbers registered with the Coimbatore Corporation under the ‘Coimbatore Managaratchiyin Urimam Petra Plumbergal Sangam’ have complained that there was widespread corruption in issuing new water connection.
In their petition to the Coimbatore Corporation officials, the plumbers have said that councillors and ruling party representatives collect applications from applicants, their details and money. Using private plumbers not licensed by corporation, ruling party functionaries execute the work and provide water connection.
When the registered plumbers visit the applicants’ houses, on being allotted work, they find that the connection had already been issued and that they were being directed to the ruling party members and councillors. In many applications that they get from the civic body officials for executing the work, they find the phone numbers especially mobile numbers and other details to be that of the ruling party members. In a few cases, the officials issue the work orders to the councillors or their representatives and the plumbers assigned.
In the interest of justice and plumbers, the civic body officials should probe into their complaint to ensure a fair administration, they added.
