Corporation Commissioner R.Sadheesh on Thursday inaugurated a one-day plastic collection drive at schools, colleges and public places here.
Mr. Sadheesh inaugurated the programme at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Moongapadi.
Under the Swachatta Hi Seva campaign, the Salem Corporation set up boxes at 100 places in its limits, including schools, colleges, Corporation offices and bus stands to prevent improper disposal of plastic waste. Students were advised earlier to bring plastic waste on the day and dump them in the boxes.
Mr. Sadheesh also created awareness among students about the dengue prevention activities being carried out by the Corporation and explained them the preventive measures.
He added that the Corporation would appoint students as sanitary ambassadors.
Power supply disconnected
Officials from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board disconnected power supply to a plastic goods manufacturing unit near Nilavarapatti here for operating without permission from the Board, discharging untreated effluents and manufacturing plastic bags banned by the government. The officials also seized 500 kg of banned plastic bags from the unit.
