Plantation workers observe fast

May 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Several workers of four plantation estates in Valparai took part in a fast, headed by Valparai MLA M. Arumugam, on Wednesday.

Mr. Arumugam said the four estates had not paid gratuity, bonus arrears, holiday wages, etc to the workers for the last 10 to 15 years.

The estates had not remitted the provident fund deducted from the salary of the employees to the provident fund organisation. At least 600 workers had not received the gratuity amount.

“I had also suggested to the government to take over the estates and to settle the dues to the workers,” he said.

The workers are on indefinite fast at Kavarkal from Wednesday demanding payment of the benefits immediately.

Representatives of several trade unions also took part in the fast.
