The Coimbatore Corporation will soon draw plans to renovate the VOC Park, one of the few recreation centres in the city.

According to Mayor P. Rajkumar he had asked the engineers to draw up a plan to rebuild the fountain, improve the landscape by replacing the damaged grass, remove broken idols or figurines and improve the over-all environment there.

The park, established over 50 years ago, is spread over 2.50 acre and has more than 200 trees, a toy train, an aquarium and ‘Jurassic Park’ – an enclosure showcasing various types of dinosaurs. It also has a boot house.

Sources in the Corporation said that the new plan would include replacing the existing sodium vapour lamps with LED bulbs so as to conserve energy and also increase illumination.

The move comes close on the heels of the civic body suspending the contract of an agency engaged for the upkeep of the park. The VOC Park on an average sees a few hundred visitors a day during weekdays and around 1,500 visitors on weekends.
