Organs retrieved from brain dead person

The vital organs were retrieved from a brain dead person at a city hospital on Monday.

Senthil Kumaran (20), a final year civil engineering student at Karunya University, was working in a company at Pollachi as a part of a project. He met with an accident in Pollachi on Saturday.

He was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries.

After initial treatment at a private hospital, he was referred to G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNMH) on Sunday in a critical condition. CT scans revealed severe brain injury. He was put on ventilator support and treated at ICU. However, he had suffered irreversible damage to the brain stem

Four doctors declared him as ‘brain dead’ on Monday at 7 a.m. The family was counselled on organ donation. Upon obtaining their consent, the hospital coordinated with Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu for the allocating the organs.

The liver was donated to a patient at GEM hospital, the kidneys to patients Kovai Medical Center and Hospital and PSG Hospitals and the corneas to Sanakara Hospital.
