Organs retrieved from brain dead person

Vital organs were retrieved from a brain dead person at a city hospital on Saturday.

Deepak (32) was referred from a Kerala hospital to G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital here for evaluation of a headache.

He hailed from Nepal and worked as a security guard in a private firm at Kerala.

His elder brother works in Coimbatore.

A CT scan of the brain showed a large bleeding in the cerebellum region. His condition deteriorated within 12 hours of hospitalisation with further scans revealing irreversible brain stem dysfunction, sources said.

A neurosurgeon explained his condition to the family, who were counselled on organ donation.

After obtaining their consent, a team of doctors retrieved the organs.

The liver was donated to a patient at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, the kidneys to patients at GKNM Hospital and KG Hospital, the eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital and the skin to Ganga Hospital.
