Organs of brain-dead person retrieved

The vital organs of a person who was declared ‘brain dead’ were retrieved here on Saturday.

Chandra Mohan, (44) a tailor from Perumanallur, was referred to G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital from a private hospital in Tirupur. He had bleeding in the brain due to hypertension. Despite the treatment, his brain functions worsened. Scans revealed significant and irreversible brain stem dysfunction.

He was examined by four different medical officers and was declared as brain dead. Following this, his family was counselled and after obtaining their consent, the hospital coordinated with the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu regarding the allocation.

A team of doctors from Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai, retrieved the heart valves and the lungs, which were air-lifted to patients in their hospital.

Since the procedure was performed during the early hours of the day, no green corridor was sought.

The liver was donated to a patient at GEM Hospital and the pair of kidneys to patients at P.S.G. Hospitals and SPT Hospital, the eyes to Aravind hospital and the skin to the Ganga Hospital.
