Organs donated to five patients

The organs of a 65-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead, were given to five patients here on Thursday.

Rajamani of Ammapalayam in Tiruppur district was hit by a speeding two-wheeler on October 14. Following initial treatment in Tiruppur, she was referred to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH), where her health deteriorated despite treatment and was declared brain dead on Thursday, a release said.

With the consent of Rajamani’s husband and sons, her liver, kidneys and eyes were harvested in accordance with the regulations of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan). While the liver and the kidneys were transplanted to the patients at KMCH, the eyes were allotted to patients at another private hospital in Coimbatore.

Similarly, multiple organs were harvested from Raghunathan (43) of Vellakoil in Tiruppur district, who died of brain aneyursm at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital on October 22.

Upon obtaining consent from family members, the kidneys, liver, eyes, lungs and heart were harvested by a team of surgeons, a release said.

While Transtan allotted the liver and one kidney to patients at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, other kidney was allotted to a private hospital in Coimbatore, the eyes to an eye hospital here, the heart to a private hospital in Chennai and lungs to another private hospital in Chennai.

Coimbatore City Police aided for the swift transport of the harvested organs to Coimbatore Airport to be flown to Chennai.
