Of the total of three Assembly Constituencies, the AIADMK managed to win only one seat in the hill district of The Nilgiris while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally the Indian National Congress (INC) winning one each of the other two.
Celebration was at its peak in the INC camp, where candidate R. Ganesh secured 67,747 votes and beat AIADMK’s D. Vinoth by a margin of 10,418 votes. It was a come back for the party to establish its hold in the Assembly constituency, which had returned Congress nominees more than six times.
In the first round, Mr. Ganesan was trailing behind the AIADMK candidate. Situation changed and the lead continued to build till his victory was declared.
On the other hand, there was almost no celebration in the DMK camp, despite their sitting MLA and Gudalur candidate M. Thiravidamani emerging victorious.
Securing 62,128 of the total 1,29,270 valid votes polled in the Assembly segment, he defeated his immediate arch rival S. Kalaiselvan of the AIADMK by a margin of 13,379 votes. While the party proved its strength in Gudalur, neither the MLA elect nor the party celebrated the victory.
They were upset over the defeat of their Coonoor candidate B.M. Mubarak by Shanthi A. Ramu of the AIADMK by a margin of 3,710 votes.
