One dead, flight diverted as rain lashes Coimbatore

One person was killed and a flight from Kolkata was rerouted as sudden rain and strong winds hit the city on Wednesday evening.

A teenager met with a fatal accident as his two-wheeler hit a tree branch on the Ettimadai – Chavadi road. According to the police, S. Surya (19) tripped after hitting the tree branch that fell on the road as a result of strong winds at around 9 p.m. and was declared dead on arrival at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. K.G. Chavadi police have registered a case under Sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

An Indigo flight, which was scheduled to arrive at 7.50 p.m. from Kolkata was rerouted to Kochi due to bad weather. Airport sources said flight No. 6E381, which is the connecting flight between Kolkata and Coimbatore, was diverted to Cochin International Airport.

Coimbatore district recorded an average rainfall of 74.1 mm on Wednesday, with Sulur recording the maximum rainfall of 16.3 mm, disaster management officials said. Sravan Kumar Jatavath, Corporation Commissioner, inspected the clearing of the fallen tree branches near Sungam on Trichy Road and the stormwater draining works under the Avinashi flyover.
