New facility to test water, soil

The new water and soil testing facility in Tirupur.

The new modern testing facility set up by Agriculture Department here this week for evaluating the quality of irrigation water and soil health at a cost of ₹75 lakh will help farmers improve yield.

This is the first of its kind in the district. The farmers were either going to Erode or Coimbatore to carry out comprehensive tests. Though we have a mobile testing laboratory, it will be moving to different blocks and hence, this new permanent facility will enable testing on all working days, said Mohamed Iqbal, Joint Director of Agriculture.

The farmers hit by pollution of soil and groundwater caused by the indiscriminate discharge of industrial effluents till now had little options to make thorough analysis of soil health and water samples.

Such testing options are very much the needed in a place like Tirupur for checking water and soil for salinity, alkalinity, nutrient levels, and electrical conductivity, among others considering the level of pollution, said K.C.M. Balasubramanian, a former agriculture economist.

The farmers can test the water and soil samples for ₹20 for one litre of water or half a kg of soil.

Agriculture officers would give free tips to farmers on overcoming deficiencies, if any, detected.

The centre has modern gadgets like microprocessor colorimeter, microprocessor visible spectro- photometer, magnetic stirrer, and flame photometer, among others.
