The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) recently instructed the Chief Engineers of Distribution regions to ensure that electricity service connections are provided only if earth leakage protection device is installed.
In a communication last month, the Tangedco said all chief engineers should effect new electricity service connections, other than the voltage not exceeding 250 v, below 2 kW load, only if the earth leakage protective device is installed by the applicant in the premises.
A senior official of Tangedco here said the direction was there earlier too. The officials will implement it strictly now. “This is for the safety of consumers and to avoid accidents. While earthing is important for any building, the consumers who apply for a new service connection should not instal the earth leakage protective device too.”
There is a risk of electricity related accidents, especially in smaller domestic buildings if there is no earthing and if the protective device is not installed, the official said.
