Rekha Nambiar, Senior Commandant, Fourth Battalion of the NDRF, said the battalion would conduct more drills this year across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

“We usually have 18 drills in one financial year. This year, we have decided to add eight more across all the regions under the Fourth Battalion in Arakkonam,” Ms. Nambiar told The Hindu.

Ms. Nambiar said there were three Regional Response Centres in Chennai, Thrissur and Port Blair, and the centre in Thrissur would be moved to Kochi in six months. There were no plans to set up more centres as that might “vitiate” NDRF’s response during a disaster, she added.

When asked whether NDRF was expected to play any role in the elections, Ms. Nambiar said the forces were totally apolitical and were concerned with only humanitarian work. “There are no planned dates for disasters. If there is a collapsed structure on the date of polling, we still have to do our jobs,” Ms. Nambiar said.

In 2015, NDRF appointed Ms. Nambiar as its first woman commanding officer of the full-operational battalion in Arakkonam. “When disaster strikes, it doesn’t matter whether you are rich or poor. You are left in the same condition,” Ms. Nambiar signed off.
