Coimbatore City Police have invoked provisions of the Goondas Act against eight persons arrested in connection with the daylight murder attempt on a history-sheeter and his friend which took place near the CSI Church, Avinashi Road, on May 14.
Accused
The detainees have been identified as M. Manikandan (27), M. Satheeshkumar (25), R. Soorya (25), N. Jagadeesh (25), Rajesh Kanna (21), E. Hariprasad (22), B. Hariharan (25) and T. Dhanabal (25), all hailing from Ganapathy area.
The police said that they were involved in the murder attempt on N. Pradeep (19) and M. Tamizhvanan (22), also residents of Ganapathy area.
Previous enmity
According to the police, the eight accused and one more person named Sanjay Dhanapal had attacked Pradeep and Tamizhvanan due to previous enmity.
The accused had created a furore in the busy part of the city as they moved with sickles and attacked the duo in broad daylight.
A release issued by the police said that the provisions of the Goondas Act were invoked under the instructions of City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan to prevent them from further indulging in similar violence.
The accused were lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
