Nature enthusiasts on Saturday foiled the move to fell two trees along Thaneerpandal – Ellaithottam road in Peelamedu area without any valid permission.

It is learnt that a group of people tried to fell the trees stating that it was to create space to construct a railway bridge.

Nature enthusiasts led by coordinator of Osai K. Syed said that the trees that were being targeted had nothing to do with the bridge work. When confronted, workers involved in the axing of the trees said that the Councillor had asked them to do so.

The Councillor denied it. When the police arrived at the spot, workers escaped from the scene leaving behind all the tools. Efforts to trace the workers and the contractor went in vain.

Mr. Syed said that the workers had already axed more than a dozen trees in the areaat regular intervals.

Mr. Syed said that it was time the police and revenue departments initiated stringent action to curb tree felling.
