Milk adulteration: case against 3

Farmers demand that they be compensated for the loss

January 06, 2015 10:32 am | Updated 10:32 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The police on Monday registered cases against Muthuvel (53), and Thilakavathi (32), respectively the president, and secretary of the Selakarachal cooperative milk producers’ society, and Kandhasamy, a van driver, who were allegedly involved in adulterating milk under sections 272 (for adulteration of food items intended for sale) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sulur Inspector S. Rameshkannan said that the case was registered based on a complaint preferred by Jayabal, president of a society at Thimmanayakenpalayam, that the accused were caught on Sunday when they were adulterating milk at the Selakarachal society.

Farmers of the society said that they were being paid less for about a week compared to the procurement price promised by Aavin.

In the next two days the society checked the quality of milk.

On Sunday they formed teams that secretly monitored a milk van that collected milk from the society and other nearby societies.

At the society in Selakarachal, the farmers saw two of their cans were filled with water.

Agitated farmers blocked the van. They sought arrest of society representatives, and repayment of the loss incurred to them. Milk producers have asked Aavin to probe adulteration of milk in the region.

The Assistant General Manager of Aavin, Tirupur, Rajasekar, said that necessary action would be taken against persons concerned, in a week. Sulur police said that Food Cell Police will conduct further inquiries in the case.
