A micro-compost yard is to be established in Khandal Mukkonam in Udhagamandalam.

The Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya, who inaugurated the construction of the facility on Wednesday, said that the compost yard would be established at ₹ 38.70 lakh. She said that once the facility became operational, it was expected that it would have the capacity to produce three tonnes of biodegradable manure.

Biodegradable waste from across Udhagamandalam town would be brought to the facility, segregated at site and sprayed with cow dung and EM solution (a liquid concentrate where micro organisms are alive, but dormant), from which the manure would be manufactured.

At the Dry Resource Collection Center (DRCC) in Khandal, plastic would be segregated from the collected waste and used for the construction of roads, added Ms. Divya.

Udhagamandalam Municipality Commissioner (in-charge), C. Ravi and other government department officials were present.
