About 40 autorickshaw drivers, who are plying at meter fares, have joined hands to form ‘Meter Autorickshaw Friends Group’.
The group was officially launched on Monday. A.R. Mohanraj (40), who heads the group, said that their drivers are aged between 27 and 55 years and were running their vehicles for the Government fixed fare since the new fare came to effect in October 2014.
Drivers of the group will have an identical display on their vehicles and will operate from various places across the city.
He claimed that many autorickshaw drivers in the city were ready to ply for meter fares, but they were forced to fleece customers due to pressure from violating autorickshaw drivers – backed by a few trade unions.
The meter autorickshaw drivers also petitioned the city police commissioner seeking protection from the avaricious drivers.
In the petition, they also suggested introduction of a prepaid autorickshaw scheme at railway junction and stations, bus stands and airport to end fleecing and earmark space for autorickshaw stands exclusively for drivers who ply by collecting fare indicated in the meter.
