Mayor P. Rajkumar pulled up engineers at the Council meeting on Monday and warned them of suspension if he found their performance below par. His outburst came after a series of complaints from councillors, who said that the junior and assistant engineers were hardly working on the field and assistant executive and executive engineers in their supervisory roles too had failed to monitor progress of works.

Ward 45 Councillor M. Gunasekaran said that it was unfair to blame engineers alone because the Corporation had not effectively distributed work and went on to point out how an engineer was in charge of water supply for 30 wards – an area much bigger a zone.

After the feedback from councillors, the Mayor asked City Engineer to give a detailed working plan and reallocate work to engineers.

The issue that dominated the council meet was Tangedco digging roads for laying underground power cable and not restoring work.

Ward 51 Councillor S.J. Ashok Kumar said that the digging on Cross Cut Road, Ramnagar and other areas had troubled residents in that the agency concerned had not alerted the residents.

Plus, in areas where it had completed the work, the road restoration work had been very slow.

With monsoon and festive season round the corner, the Corporation should prevail upon Tangedco to repair the damaged roads and also remove boxes and cables it had placed on pavements obstructing pedestrian movement.

As for the council resolutions, the civic body approved plan preparations for water management, solid waste management, urban transport management and e-governance administration under the Smart City Plan.

It decided to engage a project management consultant for the solid waste management project, send a proposal to the State Government to construct dormitories for construction workers, provide snacks to Class X and Plus Two students during evening coaching hours, engage a consultant to study the detailed project report for underground drainage work in added areas and construct more public toilets to stop open defecation.
