Man held for robbing college student


The Race Course police arrested a 24-year-old man on charges of kidnapping an 18-year-old college student at knifepoint and stealing Rs. 4,500 and a camera from him.

Police were on the lookout for an accomplice of the arrested man.Police sources said that G. Karthikeyan of Vadavalli, a first year student in a private college, went to Codissia on Friday to see cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. While waiting for a bus at Gandhipuram Bus Terminus two men on a motorcycle allegedly forced him to sit on the vehicle and took him to an isolated place near Ukkadam. They forced him to withdraw money from an ATM and grabbed Rs. 4,500. They also took away his camera and abandoned him near Ukkadam.

Based on the boy’s complaint, Race Course Police registered the case under sections 363 (kidnapping), 392 (robbery) read with 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police arrested B. Riyas alias Riyasudeen (24) of B.K. Chetty Street near Town Hall on Sunday and recovered the stolen valuables. He was lodged in jail under judicial custody the same day.

Man gets 3-year RI

District Mahila Court Judge at Udhagamandalam M. Sarvamangala on Monday sentenced a 60-year-old man to three years rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in a village under the jurisdiction of the Sholurmattam Police Station.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the accused Karuppaiah.
