The Kinathukadavu police, on Monday, arrested a 47-year-old man for murdering his 10-month-old granddaughter.

Police said that Selvaraj, a resident of Karuppampalayam near Kinathukadavu, committed the crime allegedly to take revenge on his daughter-in-law, as he suspected her to be the reason for his wife leaving him.

Selvaraj, a mason, married Sakthikani after his first wife left him.

Sakthikani left for her mother’s house in Thoothukudi a month ago, after Selvaraj developed health issues. He suspected that his son Kumar and daughter-in-law Muthumalai were the reason behind Sakthikani leaving him.

Around 11 a.m. on Monday, Selvaraj abducted the baby. He reportedly told Muthumalai that he would return the child only if she and Kumar could bring Sakthikani back home. Based on a complaint filed by Kumar, the Kinathukadavu police nabbed Selvaraj. He told the police that the baby died after falling from his two-wheeler and he buried the body. Police retrieved the child’s body from an isolated place on Othakalmandapam-Thoppampatty Road.
