The Mahila Court in Udhagamandalam on Monday convicted a 52-year-old man and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his wife and then making an attempt to end his life on May 13, 2013.

It is learnt that M. Rajadurai of Uppatti was an alcoholic and was getting treated for nerve disorder. On the day of the incident, his wife Pushpa alias Pushparani (45) and her brother Shankar (48) tried to forcibly take him for treatment. On reaching Kolapalli, the couple and their three children went to Shankar’s house.

An argument broke between the couple as Rajadurai resisted going to the hospital, and he stabbed his wife a couple of times before slitting his neck with the same knife. They were rushed to a hospital, where Pushpa died the same day.

The Cherambadi police arrested Rajadurai the next day, booked him under Sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempted suicide – the section is now scrapped) of the IPC and lodged him the Coimbatore Central Prison.

The Gudalur Court committed the case to the Mahila Court in Udhagamandalam. On hearing the arguments, Mahila Court Judge M. Sarvamangala on Monday sentenced Rajadurai to 10 years RI. The two years that he has spent in jail as a remand convict has been set off against the conviction.
