A 30-year-old man, who chopped off the left palm of his woman friend, surrendered at the Karamadai Police Station on Monday.

The woman has been admitted to the reconstructive surgery department of a private hospital in the city.

Police said that the man, R. Thangaraj from Sirumugai Road near Karamadai, committed the crime allegedly after he found that the 30-year-old woman from Chinnathottipalayam near Karamadai was close to another person.

The woman, who was working in the housekeeping section of a private hospital in Mettupalayam, was living alone after the demise of her husband two-and-a-half-years ago.

Police said that Thangaraj, a mason, was in a relationship with the woman and was giving her money to meet expenses.

“The accused recently came to know that the woman was close to another person. He visited the woman at her house on Monday noon and picked a quarrel with her. As he tried to attack her with a machete, she blocked with her left hand and the palm got chopped off,” said the police.

Thangaraj later surrendered at Karamadai police station with the severed palm. The palm was immediately taken to the private hospital in the city where the woman has been admitted for a reconstructive surgery, said the police.

Thangaraj was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
