A 58-year-old man was bludgeoned to death in a drunken brawl late on Saturday. The police have identified the deceased as Loganathan, a resident of Mylkal near Kuniyamuthur.

According to the police, Loganathan used to sell stationery articles on trains for a living. The murder took place at Sugunapuram when he was walking to home in an inebriated state.

On the way, Loganathan met Suganapuram resident Amjath Khan (18), who asked him a cigarette. Loganathan refused to give cigarette to Khan, who was also drunk. This sparked an argument between the two which ended in a fight. Khan grabbed a stone and hit Loganathan on his head and escaped from the place leaving the injured man on the road.

Though Loganathan’s son Manikandan took him to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, he died around 12.30 a.m.

The police arrested Khan, who used to work in the flower market, on Sunday morning. He was produced before the seventh judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
