Man bites police constable's finger

Peelamedu Police have arrested a youth on charges of biting a policeman's finger. The incident happened on Sunday when constable Mani, during routine rounds, questioned Nehru Nagar resident Senthil's behaviour. The latter was reportedly creating trouble in the area in an inebriated condition.

The area residents who heard Mani's cry for help rushed to the spot and overpowered Senthil. The Peelamedu police have registered a case in this connection.

Seized

Coimbatore Central Prison officials conducted surprise checks and seized mobile phones from inmates Mani, Sivasankaran, Ramesh and Moorthy. The police said they seized three mobile phones, nine batteries, two SIM cards and a headset. Following a complaint from the officials the Race Course police have registered a case.

Found dead

Six persons were dead in as many incidents in the city in the last 24 hours. The police said that in the first incident, 32-year-old Suresh, who along with his brother runs a saloon on 80 Feet Road, was found dead within the shop on Saturday morning. His brother was with him.

The Ramanathapuram Police have registered a case in this connection.

In the second incident, Boopathy of Nathan Nagar in R.S. Puram was found dead on Shastri Street in Ramnagar on Saturday.

The residents complained to the Kattoor police, who have registered a case in this connection. He smelt of liquor, they added.

The third incident involved the death of an unidentified man within the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital premises.

In the fourth incident, 55-year-old Thulasiammal, wife of Ramasamy of Harijan Colony, Chinnavedampatty, reportedly committed suicide by consuming a chemical substance that was used as a substitute for cow dung. Saravanampatty police have registered a case in this connection.

In the fifth incident, 22-year-old Anbumari of M.G.R. Nagar, Podanur, succumbed to poison from snake bite, which he sustained when he went to a farm to attend nature's call.

In the sixth incident, 42-year-old Sureshkumar of Abirami Nagar was found hanging at his residence.

Podanur police said he resorted to the extreme step as he was unhappy with the face reconstruction he underwent following a road accident he sustained a year ago.

Taken into custody

Periyanaickenplayam police have arrested two persons on burglary charges. The police said that Kannammal (40), wife of Velumani, and Manikandan (20) of Ganesapuram, Podanur, burgled Sarojini house in Veerapandi Pirivu.

The police said they had recovered the valuables.

Pirated CDs seized

City police seized 45 compact discs with pirated prints of latest Tamil movies from two persons. The police said that during routine rounds they arrested Prabhakaran (25) of Valparai, who was found selling the discs in Bharathi Colony, Peelamedu. The police also arrested Sanju (22) of Cheranmanagar and seized 26 discs from him.
