Tense moments prevailed in front of the District Police office here on Friday as a 45-year-old man, identified as S. Kalidas of Aruljyothi Nagar in the city, attempted self immolation.

He was admitted to District Headquarters hospital with severe burns and later referred to a private hospital in Coimbatore.

The man, who was a yarn merchant six years ago and now engaged in the sale of apparel, poured kerosene over himself and set himself ablaze after coming to the District Police office to meet the Superintendent of Police.

However, he tried to kill himself even before meeting the Superintendent of Police.

The version of his relatives was that a man, a few days ago, filed a complaint before the Central Crime Branch against Kalidas pertaining to some money transaction dispute that existed between them.

The complainant in that case, a businessman from Coimbatore, had accused that Kalidas owed him Rs. 55 lakh in a business deal.

However, Kalidas was said to have told CCB officials that he owed only a very small amount to the petitioner.

The CCB officials had actually asked both the parties to come on February 14 again with necessary documents to substantiate the claims.

In the meantime, Kalidas told his wife that he was going to meet Superintendent of Police to brief him about his innocence in the matter.

According to Kalidas's relatives, he was upset over the complaint lodged by the Coimbatore businessman before the CCB unit.

On the day, he came to the District Police Office in the morning itself but did not wait for the Superintendent of Police to turn up and attempted suicide.

The Tirupur North police are investigating.
