The Podanur police on Monday arrested a man on charges of murdering his wife.
R. Nagarjun (31), an auto rickshaw driver residing at Gandhi Nagar in Sundarapuram, was arrested for murdering N. Sharmila (27) on Sunday.
The police said that Nagarjun hailed from Pollachi and started residing in Gandhi Nagar two years ago. He married Sharmila in November last year. Nagarjun was addicted to alcohol and suspected his wife’s fidelity. He picked a quarrel with Sharmila on Sunday afternoon, allegedly after she spoke to one of his friends over phone. The man, who was under the influence of alcohol, stabbed her multiple times. After Sharmila died, he fled the house.
The police said that Nagarjun consumed liquor with his friends around 9.30 p.m. at Sundarapuram and told them about the murder. They rushed to the house and found the woman dead. The Podanur police were alerted about the murder.
The body was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
The Podanur police arrested Nagarjun for offences under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
