Man arrested for rape

The Coimbatore District Police on Friday arrested a man, who was employed at a home for the differently abled, on charges of raping a 25-year-old mentally challenged woman staying in the home in Mettupalayam.

The police said Lakshmanan (40) raped the woman at the home in 2021. The incident was reported by the other staff members to the Mettupalayam police on Friday and the case was subsequently transferred to the All Women Police Station in Thudiyalur. He was remanded in judicial custody.

The victim, who was found to be six months pregnant, was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, according to the police.

Man arrested

The Peelamedu police on Friday arrested a man who threatened to self-immolate outside the police station in Coimbatore. According to police sources, Murugesan (55), who claimed to be a former DMK member, was booked by the Peelamedu police recently on charges of attacking a DMK functionary.

Alleging that he was being framed, he attempted to self immolate in front of the Peelamedu police station. The police personnel restrained him immediately, the sources said. Following this, Murugesan was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Couple ends lives

A woman and her husband ended their lives at their house in Karamadai on Thursday following a verbal altercation over a family property. According to the police, Radha alias Lakshmi (41) was declared dead at a private hospital in Karamadai around 9 p.m., and her husband Babu alias Subramani was declared dead at the Government Hospital in Mettupalayam around 11.30 p.m. Their bodies were autopsied and handed over to the relatives on Friday, the police said. The Karamadai police registered a case.
