Liquor outlet near Govt. school: parents refuse to send children on reopening day

June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The presence of a liquor outlet near a Government school in The Nilgiris district resulted in parents refusing to send their children to the school on Monday, the first day of this academic year.

Petitions

According to S. Manoharan, president of the Coonoor Consumer Protection Association, the liquor outlet was located less than 60 metres from the Panchayat Union Middle School, Bettatty near Coonoor. Despite repeated pleas and petitions, including one presented last week, no action had been taken to remove the outlet.

Hence, parents refused to send their children to school on Monday as a protest.

Seek TC

Further, they have also written to the Headmaster seeking the issue of Transfer Certificate (TC) for all their children if the outlet was not removed. The parents plan to meet the Collector again on Tuesday, added Mr. Manoharan, a former Headmaster of this school.
