Life term for couple for murdering child

The additional district and sessions court here on Friday sentenced a couple to life imprisonment for murdering their infant by administering poison in 2016.

The convicts, Arjunan and Kasthuri got married in 2014 and had a girl child. In 2016, the couple had a boy. Arjunan, who doubted illicit relationship between his brother and wife refused to accept the child. Arjunan allegedly threatened to desert Kasthuri if she did not get rid of the child. According to the police, Arjunan asked Kasthuri to kill the baby by giving poison.

The couple murdered the newborn and Arjunan buried the corpse at the backyard of the house. When Kundalampatti Primary health centre staff contacted the couple to bring the child to hospital for vaccination, they avoided them with lame excuses. Later, the nurses visited the house and were not convinced with the answers provided by the couple regarding the whereabouts of the child. They immediately alerted the police.

On inquiry, Kaveripattinam police found that the couple murdered the newborn. On Friday, judge R. Vijayakumari sentenced the couple to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each. Arjunan was also sentenced to seven years imprisonment for tampering with the evidence. They were lodged in Vellore central prison.
