All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa will be the Chief Minister if the AIADMK combine is elected to power, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant said here on Friday.

Reacting to a remark by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi at a public meeting here on Thursday night that the AIADMK alliance was yet to project its Chief Ministerial candidate, Mr. Vijayakant said: “It has already been announced that Ms. Jalalalithaa will be the Chief Minister and everyone knows about this. I wonder why it has not reached Mr. Karunanidhi's knowledge.”

Campaigning for candidates of the AIADMK alliance, he pointed out that the DMDK had made it clear that it would not demand a share in power or the post of Deputy Chief Minister. Mr. Karunanidhi was passing such remarks to create confusion in the AIADMK alliance.

Criticising the DMK chief for levelling charges against the Election Commission, Mr. Vijayakant said the Commission was only ensuring fair and free polls in the State.

The DMDK leader blamed the DMK government for large-scale corruption and failure to ensure law and order. The DMK chief, his family members and his Ministers were just focussed on amassing wealth.

People in Erode district were facing serious problems due to pollution. A significant number of labourers were affected by the closure of dyeing units. The DMK government did not make any effort to sort out these issues. “People should realise these facts and vote to remove the DMK from power.”

Mr. Vijayakant campaigned for the DMDK's Erode East candidate V.C. Chandrakumar, AIADMK's candidates K.V. Ramalingam (Erode west) and T. Venkatachalam (Perundurai).

‘No development in Tirupur'

In Tirupur, Mr. Vijayakant said the DMK government did nothing for the infrastructure development of Tirupur after constituting the district with fanfare.

He said this at Perumanallur while campaigning for Tirupur North constituency candidate M.S.M. Anandan of the AIADMK and Tirupur South constituency candidate K. Thangavel of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Mr. Vijayakant blamed the State government for not coming to the rescue of industrialists for tiding over the crisis encountered by the apparel industry following the closure of dyeing units.

“It is learnt that even the subsidy of Rs.320 crore allocated by Union and State governments to offset capital expenditure incurred on setting up common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) has not reached the dyeing units till now.” According to him, the present government did not stand by the milk producers during their moments of crisis.
