A group of lawyers staged a protest demanding the closure of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) here on Friday after the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) admitted malware attack at the plant’s system.

The protest was organised by the Advocates Forum for Social Justice outside the Combined Court Complex. C. Venmani, president of the Forum, said that nearly 30 lawyers participated in the protest, which lasted for over 30 minutes.

Mr. Venmani claimed that the malware attack has exposed the lack of preparedness of KKNPP officials as they were unable to detect and control it early enough.

He asserted that cyber attacks can make the KKNPP facility vulnerable to nuclear disasters, which would adversely impact southern districts of the State. “Our stand has always been to shut the plant,” Mr. Venmani said.

Following the claims made by Pukhraj Singh, an independent cyber security expert, on Twitter that KKNPP’s domain controller-level access could have come under a cyber attack, officials denied its possibility on Tuesday.

However, on Wednesday, A.K. Nema, Associate Director and Appellate Authority, NPCIL, said in a statement that a malware system was indeed identified in its system.

Mr. Nema also asserted that the KKNPP systems were not affected by the malware.
