The Lawrence School at Lovedale here carried out from March 29 to April 7 a social service project, “Together with Kerala,” involving school children from across the country. Initiated after the floods in Kerala, the project was done in association with Round Square, an international network comprising over 180 schools.
The schools that participated in the project were Vivek High School (Chandigarh), Rajkumar College (Rajkot, Gujarat), The Doon School (Dehardun, Uttarakhand), Shri Ram School (Aravali, Gurgaon) and the Modern School (New Delhi), a press release from the Lawrence School said.
Students from the participating schools were taken to a shola forest patch within the school at Lovedale and also involved in de-weeding and watering grasslands on the institution’s premises. They were briefed on the significance of the ecosystem by Vasanth Bosco, an environmentalist, the press release said.
After enjoying a heritage train ride, the students were taken to a Toda village where they interacted with members of the tribal community and learned about their indigenous lifestyle, with the help of Tarun Chhabra, an expert on Toda culture.
On the morning of March 31, the students left for Wayanad in Kerala, where they assisted in the construction of a classroom, a playground and the putting up of a fence for a rural village for underprivileged children. They also helped in repairing of two toilets for students. Totally, 46 students and 10 teachers participated in the project.
