International Yoga Day celebrated

On the occasion of the fifth International Yoga Day, various institutions conducted yoga demonstrations, lectures and other events across the city on Friday.

PSG Institutions celebrated International Yoga Day with nearly 5,000 people performing yoga exercises and asanas. The programme was presided over by J.S. Bhuvaneswaran, Medical Director, PSG Super Specialty Hospitals. L. Balaji Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, was the chief guest, according to a release.

Kumaraguru College of Technology celebrated the day in the name of ‘Yoga Sangamam’. Around 100 students and staff members participated in a 30-minute mass yoga session inaugurated by J. Senthil, principal.

The Department of Physical Education, National Service Scheme and Yoga Club of Shree Narayana Guru College jointly observed the day. A guest lecture titled ‘Excellence of Life through Yoga’ was organised for students.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University organised a yoga demonstration in which 200 undergraduate students from TNAU as well as students from other colleges and schools participated. According to a release, M. Kalyanasundaram, Dean (Agriculture), explained the importance of yoga.

Sri Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary School in co-ordination with the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy celebrated the day by organising an event titled ‘Artistic Yoga and Mass Yoga’. Students, teachers and parents participated in the demonstration.

At Karpagam Hospital, a conference was held to mark the Yoga Day. P. Arul Jothi, AYUSH Medical Officer, Department of Naturopathy and Yogic Science, was the special guest.

International Yoga Day was observed at Air Force Administrative College and Air Force School, Coimbatore. Air Commodore S.R. Menon, Commandant, AFAC, and Jayashree Menon, president, Air Force Wives Welfare Association, participated in the event.

Isha Foundation celebrated the day at the Isha Yoga Centre. The yoga demonstration was held in front of the Adiyogi statue, which saw the participation of Commodore Ashok Rai of INS Agrani and Kamlesh Kumar, Deputy Commandant, Border Security Force, among others.

AT INS Agrani, the celebrations were held in association with Isha Foundation where the trainers from Isha guided the staff with different asanas and explained their importance in daily life, according to a release.

More than 500 members including officers, subordinate officers and Jawans participated in the celebrations on 105 RAF Campus, Mahalingapuram.

The yoga demonstration was led by Satish Kumar Dubey, Second-In-Command, 105 Rapid Action Force (RAF).

In Pollachi, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College of Arts and Science, Nachimuthu Polytechnic College and Shri Vagisvari Vidya Mandir School, collaboratively organised the day. More than 200 students participated in the event.

In Tiruppur, NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion conducted an event wherein the students created a 3D art of a yogi performing the ‘sirasasana’ (headstand). The art was created in one day by 30 students using 15 kg of newspaper, a release said.

More than 2,200 military personnel practised yoga to mark the International Yoga Day at the Sri Nagesh Barracks on Friday.

A total of 2,285 military personnel and 78 women practised yoga exercises including asanas, yogic kriyas and pranayam.

The celebration was a reminder for all individuals to incorporate yoga in their lives to be happy. It reduced the effect of stress and other physical weaknesses, a press release said.
