The much-delayed work to install escalator at the Erode Railway Junction is nearing completion.

Since elderly persons, differently-abled persons and passengers with luggage had been finding it difficult to climb the steep staircases that connected platforms 1,2,3 and 4, the railways had in 2014 announced that escalators and lifts would be installed to connect all the four platforms at ₹ 3 crore and work would be completed by 2015.

In 2018, lift facility was established to connect platforms 1 and 2 while escalator facility was completed to connect platforms 3 and 4. In 2019, work began to install escalators to connect platforms 1 and 2.

K.N. Basha, vice-president, Minority Wing of the District Congress and former member of Zonal Railway User’s Consultative Committee, said that only 75% of the work to install escalator had been completed.

In a letter to the Railway Minister and General Manager of Southern Railways, he said that it had been five years since the work order was issued to complete all the works. But the escalator work to connect platforms 1 and 2 was yet to be completed. When contacted, railway officials said that most of the works had been completed and trial run of the escalator would done very soon. They added that after the successful completion of testing, the escalator would be thrown open for passenger use.
