Inquiry into goat sacrifice held at police station

The Coimbatore (District) Rural Police have launched an internal inquiry into a ‘keda vettu’ (goat sacrifice) reportedly performed at Kovilpalayam police station on Wednesday, allegedly as a remedy for crimes and accidents being reported in the jurisdiction.

It is said that a goat was sacrificed at the police station in the early hours of Wednesday after a puja, said sources from Kovilpalayam.

They said that a goat was killed after the police were advised by someone that the remedial sacrifice will help reduce the crime and accident rate in the station jurisdiction.

Places such as Vilankurichi, Keeranatham and Kurumbapalayam coming under the station’s jurisdiction were witnessing thefts and the police were not able to contain these incidents. Similarly, accident rate was also reportedly high in the station limits. On June 27, three men were asphyxiated while cleaning the septic tank of a piggery at Keeranatham.

Meanwhile, sources with the police said that the ‘keda vettu’ held at Kovilpalayam station was not an isolated incident and goat sacrifices were earlier held in other police stations too.

Though The Hindu made attempts to contact Sujit Kumar, Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police, he was not available for comment.

It is learnt that an officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police has been tasked to inquire about the ritual.
