Rail passengers and pedestrians have a tough time navigating through the short stretch in front of the Salem junction towards town as they have to walk through the busy traffic. The footpath has been encroached by two-wheelers and street vendors.

The station premises was recently given a facelift under station development works and ₹5 crore was spent for improvement of façade area. The circulating area was improved and this had eased the traffic movement and buses were allowed to board and alight passengers inside the station.

However, rail passengers stepping out of the junction and walking towards Sooramangalam are forced to walk on the road. Though there are designated two-wheeler parking space in the vicinity of the junction, some motorists park their vehicles on the footpath to save the parking charges. Besides this, a few buses also board and alight commuters outside the station premises. With no proper space on the footpath, many wait on the road for buses. Public have demanded the authorities concerned to take necessary action.
