The civic body along with the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board on Wednesday removed houses at Quaid-e-Millath Colony that encroached upon a water canal at Kuniyamuthur.

The Corporation officials said that they had demolished 151 houses that were built in the last 30 years encroaching upon the canal that took surplus from the Kurichi Tank to River Noyyal. The encroachment had reduced the width of the 30-33 meter canal to eight meter or so.

The encroached houses were on both sides of the 150 m-long canal and they had removed the houses on both the sides.

The Board officials said that they had issued notices of eviction to all the residents around six months ago and a few days ago snapped the power supply with help from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.

They had also allotted flats to the 151 residents at the Board’s housing project in Madukkarai Anna Nagar. The Corporation officials said that they had pressed into service to heavy machinery and a few lorries in the eviction operation.

The Board officials added that the eviction drive was a part of the efforts to make Coimbatore a slum-free city.
