The Government departments and contractors usually schedule infrastructure projects such as bridge construction and laying of roads in such a manner that most of the works are completed before the monsoon sets in. Though several parts of the district saw heavy rainfall during the last few days, works have progressed for some projects and in some cases it has slowed down.
An official of the National Highways Authority of India says that the Chengapalli-Neelambur, Madukkarai-Walayar project has not been affected by the rain. Usually, when there is heavy rainfall there is a slowdown only in the case of bitumen topping and painting works. There are several other works in a project that continue. The Chengapalli-Walayar project has slowed down for other reasons and not because of the rainfall.
An official of the State Highways Department says that with availability of technology and modern machinery, there are several works in a project that can be completed in a day.
Though there has been a slowdown in some projects (in bridge and road widening segments) during the last one week, these will gain momentum soon. Concrete works can be continued even during the monsoon season. There are machinery and works are planned in such a way now that projects are not affected because of rain, the official says.
