Good south west monsoon rain in Palakkad district and the Siruvani catchments has brought good inflow to the Siruvani Reservoir.
According to sources in the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, which supplies Siruvani water to the Coimbatore Corporation for distribution, the water level rose over six feet and as on August 10 stood at nearly 47 ft.
The full reservoir level is 49.50 ft.
Officials in the Coimbatore Corporation said that the water level would further increase in the next couple of days as the catchment had experienced good rainfall.
On August 9, the reservoir recorded 200 mm and the foothills 80 mm. The water level in the reservoir in the 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. on August 10 was not available due to heavy rains in Palakkad, the officials said.
The rise of over six feet was significant given the fact that the water spread area increased as the level rises and indicated the extent of rainfall in the catchment. If the trend continued, there were chances that the reservoir could surplus, they added.
The increased water level in the reservoir had helped the Board draw over 80 million litres a day for distribution by Corporation in Siruvani-fed pockets.
The impact of good rain also reflected in the Pilloor Reservoir.
For the past three days, the Tangedco had been releasing water into River Bhavani to offset the increased inflow, which on Thursday stood at 9,400 cusecs (cubic feet per second). On August 10, the Tangedco was discharging a little over 2,800 cusecs, said the Board sources who use Pilloor Reservoir as the source for the Pilloor I drinking water supply scheme.
The district, however, did not experience heavy rain in the 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. Friday, if the rainfall recorded is anything to go by. Cincona received the maximum rainfall – 27 mm, followed by Chinna Kalar 25 mm, Pollachi 16 mm, Valparai Taluk Office – 14 mm and Valparai PAP – 12 mm.
A district administration report also said that the water level in Aliyar Reservoir was close to touching the full reservoir level as it stood at 118.20 feet as against the full level of 120 feet.
