Heavy rain lashes Salem

Salem received heavy downpour on Friday. The rains, which started during the late hours of Friday continued till the early hours of Saturday.

According to officials, an average rainfall of 22 mm was recorded in the district. Maximum rainfall of 118.3 mm was recorded in Sankari, 46.8 mm in Mettur, 42 mm in Salem, 38.4 mm in Edappadi, 21.4 mm in Attur, 21.3 mm in Omalur, 17 mm in Thamampatti, 13.8 mm in Yercaud, 5 mm in Veeraganur, 3 mm in PN Palayam, 2.8 mm in Valapadi and 1 mm in Kadayampatti.

Most of the water bodies in the district were filled to the brim and surplus water overflowed to low-lying areas. The Tharkadu Lake near Mettur got filled after years in recent rains. Similarly, Nithipuram, Kothaneri, and Ezharaimathi lakes also got filled.

Low-lying areas in Kitchipalayam, Arun Nagar and Rajaraja Nagar were inundated with rainwater and surplus water from water bodies nearby. Kumaragiri Lake filled up in the rains and areas till Kitchipalayam main road was inundated with surplus water. Traffic was affected on Kandhampatti Bypass Road and Sharadha College Road due to rainwater stagnation.

Commissioner of Revenue Administration J.Radhakrishnan on Saturday inspected outflow channels of lakes that inundated areas in Salem along with Corporation Commissioner R. Sadheesh and other senior officials and advised them to take necessary steps to prevent rainwater stagnation. He also advised officials to take necessary steps to prevent encroachments in water channels.

Mettur level

The water level in the dam was 119. 13 ft against a total scale of 120 ft. The stored capacity of water in the dam was 92,089 mcft and inflow into the dam was 10,200 cusecs. 16,000 cusecs of water was let into River Cauvery and 750 cusecs to East-West Canal from the dam.
