Good response to The Hindu in School chess contest

Students from five districts participated in the JSW Steels presents The Hindu in School Chess Competition held at Periyar University here. A total of 180 students contested in the event in three categories- Under 10, Under 13 and Under 15.

Students from Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts took part in the competition, which was conducted along with the Salem District Chess Association.

The contest was held in five rounds for all categories and the top 10 winners were selected based on points scored in the rounds.

Besides the top three winners, seven consolation prizes were given in each category.

K. Thangavel, Registrar (in-charge), Periyar University was the chief guest of the event and he awarded the winners along with J.P. Ambrose, General Manager (HR), JSW Steels Limited, Nagaraj, FIDE Arbiter and Ibrahim, Territory Manager of JSW Steels.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Thangavel said, “chess is a game of intelligence and it is gained through experience and practice.” Citing the example of how ants manage to follow a trail, Mr. Thangavel said that there many lessons that could be learnt by observing nature.

Mr. Ambrose said that positive transformation of the society was one of the visions of JSW Steels and sports was one of the ways to create positive change in society. He added that such events would help in development of more chess champions in the country.

In Under 15 boys category, Edwin Adams from Montfort Anglo Indian Matriculation School emerged winner. San Hariharan from Notre Dame CBSE School and Pranesh Kumar Sri Chaitanya Tecno School came first and second runner-ups respectively.

In the girls category, Kanishkaa M.S. from Cloony Vidhya Nikethan School emerged winner. Mounikaa Jayalakshmi from Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School and Rakghitha M.R. from Sri Swamy Matriculation Higher Secondary School were first and second runner-ups respectively.

In Under 13 boys category, Varun Sathya from Emerald Valley Public School emerged winner. Vaibhav Shree Varshan from Glaze Brooke Public School and Sai Vaishnav S.P from Emerald Valley School emerged first and second runner-ups.

In girls, Sahanaa from Vegee Public School emerged winner. Rakshatha S.A from Holy Angels Public School and Swarnika. S from Cloony Matriculation School emerged first and second runner-ups.

In Under 10 boys category, A.S. Jeeva from Holy Cross Matriculation School emerged winner. Mohammed Arman Sheik of Jayaram Matriculation School and R.S. Rithvik from Indian Public School emerged first and second runner-ups.

In girls, N. Kanishkaa, Thangam Mount Iteraa Zee School emerged winner. Swethasri from Cloony Matriculation School and S. Srinithi from Jayaram Matriculation School emerged first and second runner-ups.

Shankar Raman and Siva Subramanian from Salem District Chess Association were the chief arbiters of the event.

Indian Oil was the regional sponsor of the event and Periyar University, venue partner. The event was presented by JSW Steels.
