Gold seized at Coimbatore airport

Officials of the Air Customs intelligence unit seized 1,856 gm of gold from two passengers who arrived at the airport here from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight on Friday morning.

According to Deputy Commissioner D. Ranjith Kumar, Abdunnasar (40) and Shajahan (46) were intercepted and arrested for carrying totally 16 bars of gold, each weighing 116 gm.

The total value of the gold seized is Rs. 51 lakh. Both of them are from Malappuram in Kerala and had gone to Dubai from Kochi. One person had gone to Dubai 10 days ago and the other a week ago. They went to Sharjah from Dubai and took the flight to Coimbatore.

The officials intercepted them based on a tip-off.
