Anna University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Surappa launched a ‘Tree certification with quick response code (QR Code)’ programme at Kalam Vanam, a project to locate specific trees on the regional campus of the University in Coimbatore.

According to Vanitha Mohan, managing trustee of Siruthuli, the QR code will show the exact location of the trees planted in Kalam Vanam. “We want ‘tree certificates’ to replace mementos given during functions and special occasions. The idea came to us when we received donations to sponsor trees for birthdays and anniversaries. The ‘tree certificate’ is the proof of trees having been planted on behalf of the sponsors in the Vanam,” she said.

The Kalam Vanam – the Green Campus project - is developed and maintained by Siruthuli, a non-governmental organisation. It has planted about 70,000 saplings in the Vanam in an effort to increase green cover of the city.

Dr. Surappa was received by Siruthuli Chairman S.V. Balasubramanian and Ms. Mohan. They presented to him a detailed project report of Kalam Vanam. During their discussion, they appealed to the Vice-Chancellor for his support to take forward their plans of afforestation programme in the city. Dr. Surappa walked around the Kalam Vanam and planted a sapling to commemorate his visit, a release said.
