Getting a first hand feel of postal services

Students learnt about Speed Post, use of technology.

Students from Presentation Convent Girls Higher Secondary School and CSI Boys Higher Secondary School visited the Head Post Office and Railway Mail Sorting office to get a first hand account of how the postal service functions.

The visit was organised by the India Post to mark the Mail Day (October 12) as part of the National Postal Week being observed from October 9 to 15.

Students learnt about functioning of post offices, sorting, despatch and delivery of mails besides savings bank and philately.

In addition, a novel “Walk with the Postman” was also arranged for 10 students from these two schools. They accompanied the postman to his delivery area. Students also visited Victoria Town Hall, a heritage building over 133-years old.

At the RMS office, officials explained the journey of letters right from the time they are slipped into post boxes or handed over at counters up to their delivery. The significance of the pincode was also explained to them. Students learnt about Speed Post and the use of technology in the postal services such as bar coding and customised software for processing articles and online tracking facilities Students were given a postcard each and asked to write to their parents about their visit to the post office.
