Ahead of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations, A. Annadurai, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), Salem Division, unveiled a portrait of Gandhi at the Coimbatore Railway Junction here on Saturday.
The 30-foot painting at Platforms 5 and 6, depicting Gandhi stepping out of a train, was created in association with Rotary Club of Coimbatore Texcity.
R.S. Maruti, District Public Image Chairman, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Texcity, said the portrait was a part of the activities to mark the 100th year of Rotary Club in India this year.
Plastic bottle crusher inaugurated
Mr. Annadurai also inaugurated the plastic bottle crusher on Platform 1 on Saturday. The crusher was installed at the station in association with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Manchester.
Terming the bottle crusher installation as a milestone in green initiative, Mr. Annadurai said that the crushers will be installed in other railway stations under Salem Division before October 2. He said that the presence of plastic bottle crushers in railway station was recommended by the National Green Tribunal.
According to Mr. Maruti, the plastic bottle crusher has a capacity of 50 bottles per hour and was installed at the cost of ₹ 2 lakh.
Swachhta programme
The ADRM also participated in the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva programme along with 50 college students at the Coimbatore Junction. According to a railway official, Mr. Annadurai participated in the clean-up event at the railway yard and planted 20 saplings along with the students. The students also distributed 400 cotton bags and pamphlets on station’s cleanliness, the official said.
