Work in progress for the second level yover at Gandhipuram in the city.

The first stage of the Gandhipuram flyover from Nanjappa Road to Sathyamangalam Road will be thrown open for use next month, according to an official of the State Highways Department.

The structure work has been completed for the first stage of ₹ 192.5-crore project.

Painting works on

The official said that painting works were on and lighting would be provided on the four-lane, 1.75-km flyover.

Works for the project started in July 2015 and the entire work was expected to be completed by the end of December this year. In the case of service road for the first stage, the shops had been removed on Nanjappa Road.

Though alternative land had been identified for the temples, these had not been shifted. Yet, works were on for widening the road in the space that was available now, the official said.

In the case of the second stage, a two-lane flyover from 100-Feet road to Avarampalayam junction, final approval was awaited from the government.

It had provisions for escalations and with cost of the some of the construction materials coming down slightly, there was no necessity for additional funds though the length of the flyover would be a little more than what was originally proposed, the official added.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, pointed out the need for completion of land acquisitions for road projects so that service road works were not affected. In the long term, wide service roads were a necessity in an area such as Gandhipuram. The project would not serve its purpose when land acquisition was not done as in the original plan for the project for the service roads.
